Pura Batu Bolong Beach,

02 km south of Senggigi. Small Hindu temple located in a scenic spot at a cape overlooking Senggigi beach, named after a rock (batu) with a hole (bolong).

At the tip is an empty chair representing Brahma, the god of creation. Free entry, but you'll have to loan a sash (Rp5,000 a throw) from one of the urchins if you don't have one already. Sunsets seen from here can be very impressive.

The first of the two small mountains which are passed from Ampenan, named Batu Layar, contains the dedicated grave of one of the islamic saints (wali) which spread the islam on Lombok. The local population prays near a shrine close to the road. It's possible to walk from the summit of the second mountan to the Balinese temple along the beach of Batu Bolong.

Dining Out

Restaurant Naga. The Chinese lanterns and eye-popping, vivid-yellow sign out front compel you to stop for a bite. Specialties include cashew chicken, Hong Kong duck, and Szechuan crab; specials might include Japanese seafood stew or baked spareribs. Free transport is available to and from area hotels. Jl. Graha Restaurant. Red-tile floors and red-check tablecloths add cheer to this thatch-roof restaurant. An outdoor terrace looks out over the sea, and soft jazz plays in the background. Specialties include grilled shrimp, graha lumpia (deep-fried spring rolls with sweet-and-sour sauce), and ikan bumbu kuning (fried and with a yellow sauce). Kafe Alberto. For a quick meal of pizza, barbecued items, sushi, or homemade pasta, try this beachside, open-air restaurant, which has traditional dancing lessons and Joget Gandrung and Putri Mandalika performances. Jl. Raya Senggigi, PHONE: 0370/693313 or 0370/693039.

Nightlife and the Arts
Senggigi's main strip, Jalan Raya Senggigi, has a number of small bars and dance places that are busiest on Saturday night. The Club Tropicana Bar and Restaurant, at Senggigi Square (Jl. Raya Senggigi, PHONE: 0370/693463), has a dance floor with bands and DJs spinning salsa, pop, and rock. Just north of the Pacific Supermarket, Indigo Bar (Jl. Raya Senggigi, PHONE: 0370/693679) is a sleek lounge with plush blue couches and a teak bar. An acoustic band plays on weekends. The Sheraton Senggigi (Jl. Raya Senggigi, Km 8, PHONE: 0370/693333) hosts various cultural performances weekly.

To explore local art, check out the shops at the Pasar Seni art market, at the town's center, right on Jalan Raya Senggigi. Across from the post office, the Pamour Art Gallery (PHONE: 0370/693104) has exhibitions of Lombok and regional art, handicrafts demonstrations, and an extensive collection of crafts and furnishings.

Outdoor Activities and Sports
Scuba and snorkeling trips to the Gilis often begin at Senggigi. Many travelers book excursions from Albatross (Jl. Raya Senggigi, PHONE: 0370/693399), which has dive courses in several languages, including English and Japanese. Blue Coral (Jl. Raya Senggigi, PHONE: 0370/693441), which claims to be the first PADI representative in Lombok, is another outfit to try. The German-owned Dream Divers (Jl. Raya Senggigi, PHONE: 0370/693738) also has English-speaking dive masters.

Get In

Senggigi is about 15-20 minutes north of Mataram and its airport. Taxis charge around Rp 30,000 for the trip, while bemos will cover the distance for under Rp 5,000.

Taxis are common and even the ones waiting around for customers are usually happy to use th meter. Bemos also zip through Senggigi on their way north and south and are happy to pick up passengers; pricing is a little random, but a couple of thousand rupiah will suffice for most trips.

 BATU BOLONG COTTAGES

Located on the beachfront and surrounded by lush tropical gardens, this friendly hotel is the ideal place to relax and provides a quiet environment in which to study. Participants will be accommodated in the hotel's air conditioned Garden Cottages which include a private bathroom, WC, fan and a private terrace. Breakfast is now included for participants. Batu Bolong also features Deluxe Beachfront Cottages. If you wish to upgrade to these units you can do so at your own expense by paying the difference as calculated by the management.

The hotel is located just outside of Sengiggi on the road from Mataram and it takes you only 10 minutes to walk to Sengiggi center with all its facilities. They have some cheaper kind of bamboo bungalows (which I do not recommend) but also some very comfortable stone bungalows in a nice garden.

The Restaurant and the nicer bungalows are on the other side of the road, there is no pool but a large beach. Food is not too expensive and good but you can always take Dinner/Lunch in Sengiggi if you want to.

Although it is located on the road, it is not noisy if you choose one of the bungalows in the garden.
