Mataram is the capital of Lombok. The town actually consists of four different towns Ampenan, Mataram, Cakranegara (Cakra) and Sweta.

Ampenan has most of the towns sights, including the Negeri Nusa Tenggara Barat museum, which gives a good overview of the culture of Lombok. Cakra is the best place for eating, sleeping and shopping. It also has the Water Palace, which is worth a visit and the largest temple of Lombok, the Pura Meru. Mataram is the administrative centre and Sweta the transport hub of the whole island.

As a center of government administration, Mataram has many large, impressive public buildings and substantial houses. The city also has transportation and shopping facilities. The main square is used for art exhibitions, theater, dance, and wayang kulit (puppet theater) performances. In other parts of Mataram, there are a variety of old-style markets and neighborhoods featuring traditional craftwork like basketware and gold- and silver-threaded sarongs, or wraparound garments.

Mataram is in fact an agglomeration of a number of villages that have grown together. The main ones are Ampenan, the port on the west coast and the site of the airport; Mataram itself, in the center; and Cakranegara, the commercial hub to the east.

GET AROUND

Horse carts known as cidomo remain a common means of transport here, with the poor beasts clip-clopping their way through congested streets. These days, though, metered taxis are equally common with flag fall Rp3,850 and the meter ticking up a few hundred rupiah for every hundred meters past 2 km.

Rent a car also very common in Mataram. It cost around Rp 350,000 for 24 hours for a SUV vehicle.
